The Kashmir Paisley Shawl has been characterized by the boteh (or buta, meaning flower in India) , the principal motif with which the Paisley Shawl is associated. This repetitive curvilinear shape has been known by many names since its first appearance on Paisley Shawls in the eighteenth century including paisley, pine cone and mango. The development of the Kashmir Paisley Shawl is closely related to the development of the boteh motif; the motif’s different forms express different periods in the Paisley Shawl’s development in India. It began in the Mogul period as the flowering plant (‘floral’ boteh) , evolved into a slightly abstract representation of flowers (‘semi floral’ boteh) and then developed during the Afghan period into a more stylized curvilinear representation of foliage and flowers rising to a vertex at the top (‘cone’ boteh). By the middle of the nineteenth century, under the Sikhs, it had developed into an extremely stylized form of sweeping(‘sweeping’ boteh) sinuous curves far removed from any resemblance of nature’s flora.

100% hand embroidered Kashmir wool shawl is created by a master craftsmen from the valley of Kashmir. This is a classic Kashmir boteh(paisley) design, that has its roots in the Mughal period from the 16th century. The traditions of shawl making and embroidery has been passed down through generations to the artist. He has taken the inspiration for the shawl from traditional designs as well as from nature’s beautiful colors that is in full display through the four distinct seasons in the Kashmir valley.
A beautiful Kashmir paisley shawl , this classic is fully covered in complex and detailed hand embroidery with paisley and flower motifs making the earth brown 100% Kashmir wool base invisible in the entire body of the shawl. The central pattern on the shawl is a large cruciform flower motif with four petals, each petal made up of many small paisley and flower motifs. There are two pairs of two large sinuous paisleys each, each set located at the two ends(right and left) of the shawl. Facing inwards towards the central flower motif the two paisleys within each set are angled at a forty five degrees, each set starting at a midpoint along the right and left edges of the shawl. The large paisleys are also filled with embroidered smaller paisleys and flowers.
